NEW EVANGELISATION THROUGH NEW TECHNOLOGY

From the Desk of the Regional Superior

I deem as a singular providence of God this historical event when we, the members of the CMI Congregation of St. Thomas Region, East Africa, Devamatha Province, launch this Website, which will serve as God's channel of redemptive work and consolation.

Proclamation of the Word of God in a digital age requires that we take cognizance of the importance of digital communities and networks. Pope Benedict addressing himself particularly, albeit not exclusively, to the digital generation entrusted the evangelization of the digital continent to young Catholics: "in particular, to young people, who have an almost spontaneous affinity for the new means of communication, to take on the responsibility for the evangelization of this "digital continent." (Pope Benedict 47th World Communications Day Address, 2013).

As Catholics, we have the greatest story ever told. And although the message has not changed throughout history, the means with which we deliver it has, and must. God has always used the latest and greatest mediums to spread His message of love. First, it was spoken. Then, it was written. Next, it was translated. Then, it was printed. It has been read in books, heard on the radio, and seen depicted on television.

Today, we have the technology to spread this message of love in ways never before imagined. We can reach exponentially more people in a fraction of the time taken in the past. Our Region in East Africa, following the footsteps of our founding fathers and keen on observing and responding aptly to the signs of the times is today proud to launch a website that would enable us to spread the faith more effectively in our global world. In this digital age, as a Congregation in the 2nd Millennium our mission must embrace John Paul II's call for a New Evangelization by providing Catholic parishes, schools, and ministries with good and attractive websites that would facilitate the fulfilment of our global mission as commanded by Jesus: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Mt 28:19-20).

This "digital continent" is a virtual one with no physical boundaries, but where almost one - third of all humans - especially youth and children, and also common citizens, as well as scientists, academics and businesspeople - come together to seek information, to express their views and to grow in understanding. In this nowhere land of shared time and meaning, individuals encounter other individuals, communities, associations, and institutions. The old means of communication are integrated in a new paradigm of interaction: books, press, radio, movies and TV reinforce their contents and echo through the Internet. As a community of believers committed to making known to all people the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we are challenged to consider new means and new technologies of communication as instruments to be pressed into service for the transmission of the Word.

It is in the light of this aim that our St.Thomas East Africa Region creates this website that shall act as a "hub" of information to assist in providing and disseminating information, coordinating activities, and communicating God's message of love to all races of humanity. These are important at the parish level, at the national and global level, and for effective missionary apostolate.

This historic step will undoubtedly offer us a greater opportunity to disseminate the Word of God more widely, and directly present the timeless message of God's love for His people in more attractive ways that may engage new audiences. May this website be God's channel for meeting and sharing with all people God's message of love and hope! On behalf of the entire CMI community of St. Thomas Region I thank all you all who have worked hard to make it a reality.

Fr. Johny Thachuparamban CMI | Regional Superior

My dear friends,

It's an exciting time to be Catholic in Kenya! The parishes and Catholic organizations in Kenya are vibrant places of faith, generosity, education and love—alive with the Holy Spirit. As Catholics, we believe that it is our baptismal call to bring people into relationship with Christ and to grow closer to him. It happens when we share genuinely the message of the Gospel with those who've never heard it; when we urge those who already believe to continue to deepen their faith, and when we re-propose the Gospel to those who, though always members of the Church through their baptisms, have drifted away.

May we, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, seek a deeper relationship with Jesus. May the Spirit give us the courage we need to give witness to the Gospel and to share our faith with others. May we be filled with compassion for our brothers and sisters who are missing from our family of faith or have yet to join us and be ready to welcome them. May all who long to know Christ come to discover him through us as we strive to be his witnesses in the world and invite others as Jesus did into the experience of God's unending love and grace.

Sincerely yours in the Lord,

Fr. Anto Thekkudan CMI | Councilor for Pastoral Ministry
